Sandra Hurll

Sandra Hurll MSDC - stitched textiles

Sandra is a designer-maker working with textiles and mixed media.
She works from personal observations recorded at home and abroad referencing landscapes, gardens, pattern and colour to create wall hangings & framed pieces and fabric sculpture / lights.

Sandra’s stitched textiles have developed over time introducing mixed media. She uses machine & hand stitch to embellish collaged papers, news and magazine print, and painted fabrics.

This mix of media provides a range of interpretations of a theme whether from home, across the Atlantic or the other side of the world.
Sketchbooks are full of ideas based on the natural countryside, whether inspired by the tough grasses growing in Richmond Park or the colourful birds in the treetops of Sydney.

Sandra makes three dimensional fabric sculpture / lights. The opacity of the coloured and decorated fabric provides a vibrant highlight / focus to a room setting, when a light source is placed inside the colours are intensified. The fabric, Lutradur lends itself to these spiral and columnar forms, which are painted, appliqued, stitched and heat tooled.
